Am I a Good Candidate For Invisalign®?

Invisalign® can help with many dental issues, but you might be wondering if you are a good candidate for this teeth-straightening option. This option is considered one of the most comfortable and aesthetic options out there. However, Invisalign may not be for everyone. An Invisalign dentist can help you determine if you are a good candidate or not.

What needs to be fixed?

The biggest question when it comes to determining if someone is a good candidate for Invisalign is what needs to be fixed in the patient’s mouth. If the patient’s teeth are severely misaligned, Invisalign may not work. For example, severe overbites may require other orthodontic procedures to shift the jaw itself. However, there are several cases that Invisalign can treat. These include:

  • Gaps in the teeth
  • Minor overbite
  • Minor underbite
  • Crowded teeth
  • Crossbite

Patients with severe cases may need to turn to another treatment option, such as metal or clear braces. An orthodontist can help a patient decide the right alternative treatment.

Age

Invisalign works well for both teenagers and adults. However, for children and even younger teenagers, Invisalign may not be a good option. The teeth and jaw are still growing, so Invisalign may not have the most ideal results.

However, both adults and older teenagers often enjoy Invisalign because it is transparent. Teenagers often struggle with their self-image and having Invisalign can help increase their self-esteem. This is especially true once the teen starts to see results from the aligners. Adults can also benefit from Invisalign because many adults will experience self-consciousness when wearing metal braces because braces are generally seen as something that teenagers have.

Dedication to the treatment

The right candidate for Invisalign will be very dedicated to the treatment. However, because Invisalign aligners can be removed, it can be tempting to avoid wearing them for the recommended amount of time each day. This is especially true because patients must remove the aligners during each meal, snack or beverage other than water.

In order for this treatment to properly work, patients must wear the aligners for at least 22 hours a day or longer. Patients must be committed to wearing the aligners and properly caring for them. For example, leaving the aligners on the table can lead to them becoming bent. This can make them ineffective.

Finally, patients must ensure that they will clean the aligners. While oral hygiene during Invisalign treatment is easier than with braces, patients will still need to take some extra steps. This will ensure that the trays do not trap bacteria against the teeth.

Visit a dentist today

The only way to determine if you are a candidate for Invisalign is to visit a dentist. The dentist can evaluate your teeth to determine what needs to be done to fix your teeth. Your dentist will also discuss your medical history with you and ask if you will commit to wearing each set of aligners. Contacting a dentist today is the first step in getting a straighter smile.
