Before you get a dental implant, your dentist may recommend bone grafting. This procedure is done when a patient does not have enough bone in the jaw to support the impact of the dental implant. Most of the time, this is an extremely successful procedure. However, in some cases, a bone graft can fail.
What is a bone graft?
There are several factors that can impact the amount of bone that a patient has in their jaw. For example, advanced stages of periodontal disease can cause the bone to deteriorate. This is why a patient’s teeth can become loose in the advanced stages of this disease. If a patient had a tooth extracted in the past, that patient can lose the bone around the area. Some studies have estimated that as much as 40% to 60% of the bone is lost after an extraction. This can result in what is known as a “bone defect.”
Finally, an injury can also result in lost bone. For example, a blow to the jaw can cause the bone to recede over time. An infection can also cause bone loss.
During the procedure, the dentist will take bone from another location on the patient’s body. For jawbone grafts, this bone usually comes from near the patient’s soft palate. The dentist will make an incision in the area. The dentist can then anchor the bone in place. The patient will receive medications to help manage swelling and pain.
Over the next several months, the bone will integrate with the patient’s existing bone. The new cells will ensure that the new bone is firmly adhered in place. The patient may take supplements that will encourage bone growth.
Failed bone grafting
The success rates of bone grafts are extremely high, especially if patients care for the site properly. However, there can be problems with this procedure. For example, if the dentist uses poorly sterilized tools, the patient may get an infection.
Poor care after a bone grafting procedure can also lead to a failed graft. It is important for patients to follow all instructions from the dentist after the bone grafting procedure. The good news is that a bone graft is likely to be successful. In the rare case that it is not successful, the dentist will be able to try a second time.
Patients will need to avoid rinsing the mouth so the blood clot will not be disturbed. Patients should also avoid extremely hot foods, which can prolong bleeding. A dentist may recommend swishing gently with a saltwater solution after the first 24 to 36 hours. This can help to kill harmful bacteria near the surgical site and reduce the risk of getting an infection.
