Caring for Your Dentures

Dentures require a great deal of maintenance to do their job correctly and keep your oral health in great shape. A strict daily regimen of care is recommended for all patients with dentures.

Read on to find out the best tips on caring for your dentures and keeping them looking new for longer.

Tips on caring for your dentures

Rinse dentures after eating

This rush of water over the appliance helps clean them. It also offers an easy way to remoisten them, allowing the devices to maintain their shape.

Remove dentures for at least five hours per day

If you forget to take out your dentures at bedtime, be sure to remove them for at least five hours every 24 hours. This helps to stave off a bacterial attack and gives your mouth muscles and tissue a much-needed break.

Brush dentures daily

Gently clean your dentures each day. Soak them in a denture cleaning solution approved by your dentist. Brush gently in small circles with a soft toothbrush to remove plaque and residue buildup. Any remaining adhesive should also be brushed away. Keep in mind that denture cleansers are not safe for use inside the mouth.

Brush and clean the mouth and gums when dentures are removed

Any remaining natural teeth need to be paid extra attention. Brush with a soft-bristled toothbrush and mild fluoride toothpaste to reach the cheeks, gums, tongue and roof of the mouth. Be sure to take off any excess denture adhesive from the gums before going to bed. This is an important step that must never be skipped.

Teeth are not the only part of the mouth that are susceptible to microbial attack. If bacteria are able to build up, they can set up shop in the gums and cause gum disease. Gum disease can be prevented by following a strict oral hygiene routine twice daily.

Always soak dentures overnight in a safe solution

Water or any mild denture solution works. To work properly and keep their shape, most types of dentures require moisture. However, check with your dentist on the exact instructions for your personalized dentures.

Rinse dentures before replacing them in the mouth

This step is especially crucial for those who use a denture soaking solution overnight. These solutions contain harsh chemicals that can produce unpleasant side effects if ingested, like vomiting or burning of the mouth.

Beyond clearing the dentures of the overnight solution, rinsing the device before returning it to the mouth can also keep bacteria levels in the mouth at a safe level.

Treat them like they are your natural teeth

This means using your dentures as they are intended. Try not to chomp on any hard foods or put them through excessive wear, just like you would be careful not to damage your natural teeth. Do not use dentures to open packages or bite your nails.

When cleaning dentures, be careful to handle them gently. The plastic can easily bend, and the clasps can be damaged if you are too rough with them.
