The Form of Braces People May Not Know About: Ceramic Braces

Children may groan and even beg for mercy upon hearing that they will have to get braces. No one wants to deal with the mess of metal wires and brackets in their mouth. The idea of people at school noticing a child is wearing braces can scare children away from the idea. Many children and adults are unaware of an alternative to metal braces that work just as well.

Why a child needs to wear braces in the first place

Children may not be aware of the numerous issues they can prevent by wearing braces. Mouthhealthy.org explains that “Braces and orthodontic treatment are used to correct “bad bites,” or malocclusion (teeth that are crowded or crooked).” Braces can also help correct a misaligned bite, preventing tooth decay and other infections.

Braces also help create a more aesthetically pleasing appearance and can even help to boost confidence in children upon removal. While braces can seem awkward and annoying, they are a crucial step on the road to high levels of dental health in most people. However, convincing a child that braces are useful can be easier said than done. Due to advancements in orthodontic technology, there are now several forms of braces that a patient can choose.

Lingual braces are one form of braces that has the brackets placed along the inside of the teeth instead of on the front. This method is not usually sought out for children since it is difficult to brush and maintain. While removable clear aligners are another option for teens and adults, clear aligners are not the best choice for children.

A clear contender: Ceramic braces

Ceramic braces are not only a strong option for children but for teenagers and adults who are considering their choices. Instead of metal, ceramic braces are tooth-colored and have a tooth-colored wire to be more inconspicuous. This less-noticeable option is ideal for people who do not or cannot afford clear aligners.

Oralb.com explains that ceramic braces are “Less noticeable than metal braces,” and can “move teeth much faster than clear plastic aligners.” While these are a bit more expensive than traditional metal braces, they are just as effective and more discreet. Children will be much more likely to consider wearing braces with ceramic braces as an option. Speak to an orthodontist on the cost and benefits of ceramic braces. From there, speak with your child and decide what the best option will be.

Children will need to clean ceramic braces more closely since they can stain more easily than other forms of braces. Regardless, if this option will help motivate your child to be more attentive in caring for the braces, then it may be the better choice.
