Do Clear Aligners Move Teeth More or Less Quickly Than Traditional Braces?

Choosing between clear aligners and traditional metal braces can be difficult. Braces have been effective for decades, while aligners are a newer treatment. Both have benefits and drawbacks, so you should speak to your dentist about which one makes the most sense for your needs. Still, one of the appealing factors of aligners is that they can offer faster results.

The case for braces

In some form, braces have been around for at least a couple of centuries. Made of metal brackets and wires, the braces put pressure on the teeth, changing the bone structure. This moves teeth individually and collectively into the desired places in the mouth. Braces are more cost-effective than clear aligners and usually have some dental insurance coverage. Because braces are fixed, the patient will not have to worry about losing them.

The case for clear aligners

Aligners accomplish the same goals as braces. These plastic mouthpieces can straighten teeth and fix overbites, underbites and crossbites. Aligners can also create more space in a patient’s mouth and correct misshapen teeth. Aligners appeal to people because they are discreet and virtually invisible. People who wear them should not experience the same irritation on gums and cheeks that braces can cause.

Treatment length

People who are self-conscious about their appearance and smile often choose clear aligners instead of braces. There are other reasons why aligners might be the right option. In many situations, people will not have to wear aligners as long as braces. Patients should realize that everyone has different conditions and needs. These factors will affect the treatment duration.

In general, patients wear braces for two to three years. The treatment length of aligners is usually 12 to 18 months. Some patients may only have to wear the mouthpieces for six months. It is rare for a patient to extend treatment beyond two years.

Sticking to the treatment schedule

The patient plays a key role in how long the clear aligners will stay in the person’s mouth. Ignoring the dentist’s directions will slow down the movement of teeth and make the treatment longer. Patients should come in for regular appointments. People do not have to wear the aligners constantly but keeping them in for 20 to 22 hours a day will increase the likelihood of success.

Another key element of shortening the treatment time is maintenance and care. People with clear aligners should rinse them off throughout the day and brush them at least twice daily. If a patient breaks or loses the aligner, it is important to inform the dentist right away.

Achieve a new smile faster

For some people, wearing conventional braces may seem like a smart move. However, clear aligners have some advantages, including a faster treatment time frame. You can likely accomplish your oral health and cosmetic goals in less time when you diligently wear your aligners. If you are not sure which option makes sense for you, speak to a dentist. You can learn more about the process and its results.
