How to Reverse a Cavity

Learning how to reverse a cavity will save you lots of money and time down the road. Cavities are tiny holes that form on teeth as a result of tooth decay.

Tooth decay is a process that occurs gradually. It is caused by acids in the drinks and food a person consumes and the acids that are created by bacteria that live in the mouth.

These bacteria feed on food particles left in the mouth after meals. They feast and excrete corrosive acids. These acids gradually eat away teeth enamel, the outermost layer of a tooth. It is the strongest part of the human body, and its job is to protect the more delicate inner layers of a tooth. If the enamel is not being properly protected from these acids by brushing and flossing or they are not getting properly mineralized, cavities will eventually form on them.

Fortunately, it is possible to stop the decay in its tracks by improving oral hygiene and using the following tips:

Five simple things that can reverse a cavity

1. Avoid sweet things

The bacteria that produce acids in the mouth love sugary things. Sugar is also acidic in nature and tends to stick to teeth surfaces for longer periods than other foods. When a person is constantly snacking on sweet things, their enamel is constantly being bombarded by acids in the sugar and acids created by the bacteria in the mouth.

When a person eats something that contains lots of sugar, they should rinse their mouth with water to get rid of some of the acids.

2. Use products that contain fluoride

Fluoride is an important mineral when it comes to keeping teeth healthy. It helps remineralize and restore the enamel. Fluoride also makes it harder for bacteria that live in the mouth to produce acids.

People with tooth decay should use products that contain fluoride when cleaning their mouth. They should also talk to a dentist about fluoride treatments. Fluoride varnishes and tablets can also be used to help reverse a cavity.

3. Consume calcium-rich products

Calcium plays an important role when it comes to keeping teeth and bones healthy. Those who are calcium deficient are more likely to deal with tooth decay. Fortunately, there are many everyday foods that contain calcium, like milk, yogurt, cheese, grains and green leafy vegetables.

4. Practice good oral hygiene

It is almost impossible to ward off tooth decay without practicing good oral hygiene. Brushing at least twice and flossing once a day gets rids of food particles and acids on teeth before damage can be done.

5. See a dentist regularly

Dentists have the necessary skills and tools when it comes to fighting off tooth decay. They also have many tools at their disposal, like dental sealants, varnishes and fillings, that can be used to protect the health of a patient's teeth.
