Mini Dental Implants to Stabilize Dentures
Without question, a mini dental implant is a great solution for avoiding slippage. Do you currently wear dentures or perhaps you know someone who does? If so, you know that these can become loose and even fall out. Especially when around a group of people, the last thing you want is to experience an embarrassing moment.
Mini dental implant: different from traditional implants
With traditional implants, a dentist inserts several titanium screws into the jawbone of the patient. Then, the dental professional attaches a connector known as an abutment. After several weeks when the patient’s mouth has healed, the dentist attaches the replacement teeth. With a mini dental implant, the process is less invasive and faster.
For the mini version, a dentist still inserts a titanium screw or post into the jawbone. However, there is no abutment required. Instead, the implant has a small ball at the end that secures it to the dentures. As a result, most patients do not have an extended healing period. Rather than waiting, the dentist can usually attach the implant on the same day.
Keeping dentures secure
One reason that a dental professional recommends a mini dental implant is because the patient does not have adequate bone density to support traditional implants. However, there is another reason. That is to serve as an anchor to keep dentures securely in place. For one thing, that prevents the risk of slippage. Also, it makes the dentures fit better, so they look great and feel more comfortable.
Most people who wear dentures already feel self-conscious. Then, for them to worry about their dentures falling out only makes matters worse. With a mini dental implant, the dentist secures the dentures onto the ball. For optimal security, that attaches to an O-ring, eliminating the risk of them becoming loose. That means people can laugh, talk and eat with ease.
A lot of times, a mini dental implant goes on the bottom. However, a dentist can place this on the top as well. Before doing anything, the dental professional will check the patient’s current dentures. If they are more than five years old, have caused a poor bite or show signs of extreme wear, the patient would need a new set. From there, the dental professional can offer a mini dental implant to keep the dentures secure.
The reason that a mini dental implant is more commonly used for bottom dentures is that the upper ones tend to stay in place better. In other words, slippage typically involves the lower set. Regardless, the dentist will check both. If necessary, the patient can get a mini implant for the upper and lower dentures.
A brand-new you
Just imagine never having to worry about your dentures slipping again. You can eat what you want and feel completely natural when talking, yawning, laughing and sneezing. Take the first step by contacting your dentist. From there, they can determine if you make a good candidate for a mini dental implant.
