If you have sensitive teeth, the manner in which you eat, drink and care for your teeth matters a great deal. The last thing you need is for the temperature of your drink or food to cause tooth pain that renders you unable to function. Teeth become sensitive due to cracked enamel. This causes the interior portion of the tooth to be exposed when it should be protected. Teeth are primarily comprised of dentin filled with tiny tubules that have uber-sensitive nerves. The protective layer on the outer portion of every tooth, known as the enamel, is meant to block off tubules and prevent the onset of pain. Most dentists believe the constant movement of fluid in the tubules is the primary cause of discomfort that we interpret as tooth sensitivity.
How to Fight Back Against Sensitive Teeth: Use Fluoride!
If your sensitive teeth bother you, it might help to use desensitizing toothpaste or decrease the consumption of acid. Make sure the toothpaste you select has fluoride. In certain cases, sensitive teeth can be treated by the dentist with a fluoride tray or varnish. This solution is applied directly to the sensitive tooth to minimize discomfort and pain. Fluoride also strengthens the tooth dentin and enamel. Opt for a fluoride gel at the dentist's office and it will only take about five minutes for the application. It is that easy!
A Mouth Guard Can Help
Those who suffer from sensitive teeth as a result of bruxism will find their dentist can create a teeth model to build a mouth guard. This guard should be worn during sleep to prevent teeth grinding that leads to additional tooth sensitivity. The mouth guard protects the teeth and even alleviates discomfort in the jaw.
Cover the Surfaces of the Root
Patients with gum disease or receding gums caused by the aging process are that much more likely to have sensitive teeth. This is due to the fact that the root of the tooth is exposed. Such exposure can be remedied with the use of bonding agents. The dentist will apply the sealant to cover root of the tooth causing the pain, allowing for the surface to be fully sealed.
Refrain From Consuming Acidic Foods and Beverages
Some types of beverages like citrus fruits, yogurt, coffee and carbonated beverages are more likely to cause tooth sensitivity than others. This is due to the fact that acidic products can spur the elimination of tooth enamel. Try to avoid acidic foods. If you absolutely have to drink a carbonated beverage, use a straw so the liquid does not contact your sensitive teeth.
A Root Canal Might Be Necessary
If your sensitive tooth is especially painful and none of the pain alleviation methods outlined above work, your quality of life will decline. At this point, the dentist might decide a root canal treatment is the best option. This procedure removes the soft pulp within the tooth and consequently reduces discomfort.
