Yes. However, the degree and speed at which teeth whitening works depends on the type you use. The teeth whitening solutions provided at the dentist's office are almost always stronger than the type you can obtain at the local store. Teeth stains are either extrinsic or intrinsic.
The extrinsic variety is along the surface of the teeth while intrinsic stains are deep in the enamel or dentin. Receiving a teeth whitening procedure at the dentist's office will help remove those pesky intrinsic stains.
How does teeth whitening work?
Teeth whitening procedures rely on bleaching to whiten the teeth. Bleach has the active ingredient of carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. Such ingredients are quite helpful at removing stains that are particularly stubborn and/or deep. The active whitening agent moves into the enamel, thwarts the molecules that discolor the teeth and allow for oxygen molecules to spread across the enamel and create a bright smile.
Should certain foods be avoided when bleaching the teeth?
Yes. Certain foods and beverages will pose a considerable threat as they can stain the teeth amidst the bleaching process. Avoid these foods and beverages for upwards of half a week after your teeth are whitened. The whitening process certainly improves the look of the teeth yet they also become dehydrated during this process.
Dehydrated teeth are permeable to substances that cause staining. Do your best to avoid dark chocolate, stews, smoothies, popsicles, juice, red wine, coffee, soda, tea and hot and cold beverages/foods in the days following your teeth bleaching. If you are insistent on consuming one of these treats that stain the teeth, opt for a straw to limit contact with your pearly whites.
Is it safe to whiten the teeth when pregnant?
The answer to this question is unclear at the moment due to the lack of information on the topic. The American Dental Association has left this decision up to female patients. However, some dental professionals refuse to whiten the teeth of pregnant women due to insufficient research.
In terms of whitening the teeth when breastfeeding, there is minimal research to prove its safety or possible danger. Most mothers delay teeth whitening until breastfeeding is complete. However, there is not enough research to show one opinion or the other has merit.
Is teeth whitening uncomfortable?
Some patients experience a bit of discomfort during the teeth whitening process. Each patient responds uniquely. In certain cases, there is sensitivity to bleaching. Doctors are uncertain why the nociceptors in the mouth are sensitive to bleach.
If you find your teeth are sensitive following teeth whitening, it might help to use a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth, brushing more gently with lukewarm water and refraining from consuming hot or cold foods for a few days following the procedure.
Heres' the deal
