The Pros and Cons of Invisalign

The Invisalign process may be a solution for those who were not blessed with two perfect rows of pearly white teeth or who may have had an accident that shifted teeth. Many people go through the long process of braces to correct this issue, which must be worn continuously over a couple of years or so. Others may avoid showing teeth — refusing to smile or covering their mouth with a hand.

There are other solutions, however. The Invisalign process involves a semi-rigid, clear plastic tray, which is form-fitted to an individual’s mouth and teeth. It is designed to use tension to gently and gradually move a person’s teeth into correct alignment patterns. The trays are replaced periodically with new trays adjusted for the next phase of movement.

Invisalign pros and cons

When considering this fix for crooked teeth, one must look at both the advantages and disadvantages of this particular treatment procedure. Review the following before proceeding:

The pros of choosing Invisalign

There are numerous reasons why this technique is recommended for many. The materials used are transparent, and therefore much less noticeable than the traditional wires, brackets and bands of brace work. Many people enjoy being able to remove the trays to enjoy chewing gum, eating popcorn or nuts, and having an easier time brushing and flossing the teeth, as well as giving full access for any necessary dental work. Another pro is that the process can be used to correct small adjustments after braces come off.

The trays are also more comfortable against the inside of the cheeks and lips. It is also notable that those using this process may sustain less serious cuts or lesions when accidentally hit or bumped in the mouth than those wearing metal braces, as they may be more flexible. This makes it a potentially more attractive option for those involved in contact sports and other rougher physical activities.

The cons of using Invisalign

Since the trays are removable, there is a risk of losing or breaking them and having to pay the replacement cost. The trays are potentially more expensive than braces because of frequent lab fees for refitting and construction of the next set of trays.

The mouthpieces require a specifically trained orthodontist to properly manage the care and adjustments needed for optimum correction.  The system potentially takes more time than traditional braces as the corrective properties may not be as strong.

It is important to note that if one does not take proper care of one's teeth, tartar, plaque and food can build up on tooth surfaces, causing cavities and other problems that can be visible through the trays and may complicate treatment.

Conclusion

While the Invisalign process is a more attractive alternative to traditional brace work, it may not be the best answer for everyone. For those who are committed to leaving the trays in at least 22 hours of the day and taking proper care of teeth and gums to avoid dental complications, it may be the answer to a more beautiful smile.
