The Three Steps of Getting Dental Implants

Wondering if you should choose dental implants to replace your missing teeth? Even if you are just missing one of your teeth, you need to find a tooth replacement option as soon as possible. A healthy mouth is one that has a full set of teeth so the sooner you find a replacement option that works for you, the better.

What exactly is a dental implant?

Learning more about what dental implants and how they work is the first thing you need to do when deciding in between tooth replacement options. According to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, dental implants are the closest you can get to healthy, natural teeth. This is why so many dental patients who are missing teeth are choosing to have implants placed in their mouths, as they want to experience the benefits that come with a natural tooth replacement option.

The three steps of getting dental implants

The list below includes the three steps that are necessary to undergo when they choose to get dental implants as their tooth replacement option. It is important to understand that before a patient can undergo the three steps listed below, they will need to make an initial consultation appointment with a dental professional in order to create a treatment plan.

#1 – Placing the implant

The first step requires patients to undergo a minimally invasive implant surgery. The patient will then receive an anesthetic so that the dental professional can make a small incision in their gums in order to place the titanium implant screw into their jawbone. The process can take anywhere between 45 minutes and two hours and is dependent on how many implants are being placed in the patient’s mouth.

#2 – Healing

The second step of getting dental implants is the healing stage. It tends to take somewhere in between three months and six months for an implant to fully and properly fuse to a patient’s jawbone. It takes this long because the osteointegration process is a slow one, yet necessary in order for the implants to work as they are supposed to. Once it has been determined by a dental professional that the patient has fully healed from the first step, they are ready to receive their restoration.

#3 – Placing the crown

Placing a dental crown over the implant is the third and final step of the process. This requires the dental professional to first connect in abutment to the implant so that the crown can be then placed over the abutment. The dental crown is custom-made for the patient, which means they can expect it to match the rest of their teeth, which makes for a pleasant-looking smile.

Ready to schedule your first appointment?

Have you decided that dental implants are right for you? Now that you understand what you need to go through in order to have one or more dental implants placed in your mouth, is this the right tooth replacement option for you? If it is, understand that the sooner you call to make your first consultation appointment, the sooner you can be on your way to having your missing teeth replaced so you can have a healthy mouth.
