Wisdom Teeth Extraction

What Happens If I Wait on a Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

Looking for information on wisdom tooth extraction? Many dental patients want to feel prepared when undergoing any type of dental treatment. In fact, this is recommended as the more patients know, the higher their chances of experiencing a successful outcome. If you are currently in need of having one or more of your wisdom teeth extracted, understanding more about the wisdom tooth extraction process is recommended.

About wisdom tooth extraction

Extraction is typically only necessary for patients whose wisdom teeth are going to or are already causing them problems. Not every dental patient can accommodate this third set of molars, as they simply do not have enough room in their mouth. This means that when their wisdom teeth begin to grow in, they will cause problems. While wisdom teeth begin to form right around the age of 10, they do not start growing in until one’s late teens or early twenties.

What happens when someone waits to have a wisdom tooth extracted?

The following is a list of some other dental problems that dental patients will experience when their wisdom teeth begin to grow in and they do not have enough room in their mouth to accommodate them.

An abscess can occur

When a wisdom tooth tries to grow in where there is not enough room, it is more likely to get infected due to its incorrect position. The spaces in between the wisdom tooth and the gums are therefore more likely to become infected due to the food and bacteria that can accumulate here. This infection can lead to an abscess, which is not only a serious infection that can harm the mouth, but it can also harm the body.

The rest of the teeth will begin to shift out of their positions

When a wisdom tooth grows in and there is not enough room to accommodate it, the other teeth will be forced out of their proper positions. Crooked teeth have a much higher chance of being diagnosed with cavities as they are harder to clean. Crooked teeth are also not as aesthetically pleasing, which can make one feel self-conscious about the way they look when they smile.

A higher chance of the wisdom tooth and/or jaw fracturing

When wisdom teeth grow in wrong, it is more difficult to extract them, which can cause them to fracture during the extraction process. Removing fractured wisdom teeth requires patients to undergo a longer recovery time. When there is not enough room to accommodate wisdom teeth, they can potentially weaken the structural integrity of one’s jaw. A weak jaw is prone to fracture.

Do you need your wisdom teeth extracted?

If you know that wisdom tooth extraction is necessary, you need to have the procedure performed as soon as possible. If you do not, you will experience additional dental problems sooner or later.
