What is Routine Dental Cleaning?

The goal of a dental cleaning performed by a dentist is to remove stains, tartar, and plaque that has accumulated on your teeth. These are things that can develop on your teeth even if you have good oral hygiene habits like brushing and flossing regularly.

A dental cleaning is an important part of good oral hygiene, and most dentists recommend getting your teeth cleaned at least twice a year. regular dental cleanings significantly reduce the odds of developing issues like tooth decay and gum disease.

What are tartar and plaque?

Plaque is the soft, sticky film that develops on your teeth after you eat. It is usually home to millions of bacteria that can lead to the two most common dental ailments: tooth decay and gum disease. You can remove plaque from your teeth by brushing and flossing often.

Tartar, on the other hand, is a lot more difficult to get off your teeth. Also known as dental calculus, tartar is a calcified deposit that hardens on your teeth and leads to tooth decay. During a dental cleaning, your dentist will use special tools to remove this tartar from your teeth without damaging the enamel. Each tooth is worked on individually to remove all the tartar deposits on it.

What to expect during a dental cleaning

A dental cleaning is a painless procedure. It does not involve the use of an anesthetic. The only thing you will feel is slight pressure from your dentist working on your teeth and vibrations from some of the tools that will remove the tartar buildup.

Your dentist will start off the cleaning by using a metal tool or laser to break off tartar deposits on your teeth. A vibrating tool is then used to shake off tartar in places that your dentist can't reach with his/her specialized tools.

Once your teeth are tartar-free, Titan Dental Care will perform a professional flossing and polish your teeth afterward. They will then give your teeth a fluoride treatment which protects them from decay for months. The entire process typically lasts anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour on average.
