Dental emergencies occur more commonly than most people think. While dental emergencies are just like regular health emergencies, it’s good to know what to do if one may occur. Thankfully, there are a variety of things that people can do if and when, they or someone that they love is experiencing a dental emergency.
Today, we will discuss what dental emergencies can happen as well as the best thing to do for each of the main occurring emergencies. Knowing what to do during a dental scare can be beneficial for people who may experience their own.
Common dental emergencies and what to do
Cracked or chipped tooth
A tooth can get cracked or chipped at any time. As durable and strong as the teeth are, there are occurrences that might damage them. For example, a person may bite down on something that is too hard or they might get hit with something that causes a crack or chip in the tooth.
If a person cracks or chips their tooth, it is absolutely necessary to schedule an appointment with the dentist as soon as possible. But, if they are unable to be seen right away, it’s best to rinse the mouth thoroughly with warm water. Adding salt to the warm water can also benefit the tooth, and mouth to ensure that tooth particles aren’t floating around. Apply a cold compress if there is swelling or pain from the tooth being cracked or chipped.
Toothaches
While most of us don’t know the main reason behind toothaches, they are still pretty common. Most of the time toothaches come about and create a lot of pain or discomfort. If a person is unable to visit the dentist immediately to have it treated, then it’s best to do a proper cleaning at home. Brush the area gently and floss to ensure that there aren’t any left behind food particles. Rinse with warm water to ensure that the mouth is completely clean. It has been suggested to take an over the counter pain medication as well to calm inflammation and ease the pain.
A knocked out tooth
Occasionally, people may experience extreme trauma to the face where a tooth is completely dislodged from the mouth. Sometimes this happens from a physical force to the face such as a fight or a sporting event. The best thing to do when this happens is to carefully try and place the tooth back into the area where it came from, without touching the roots. Immediately get to the dentist office so that they can try and repair.
As with any health problem, there are emergency rooms that can be visited. There are urgent cares for dental problems where they address any immediate dental problems. If those places aren’t open then visiting the local ER may be the best option. However, seeing a professional trained in dental medicine is best.
