Bone Graft

When You Need a Dental Bone Graft

A lot of people aren’t familiar with dental bone grafts because they aren’t as common as other types of grafts. However, they are quite common within dentistry and with good reason. Dental bone grafts help people achieve a lot of things including natural chewing, confident smiling and even normal speaking again.

Knowing when a dental bone graft is needed can be helpful for someone who isn’t sure if they need one or not. In this article, we outline when a person may need a dental bone graft. Keep reading to find out what you need to know!

What is a dental bone graft?

A bone graft is a procedure that involves taking healthy bone from one part of the body and placing it where the bone structure is needed. In the case of dental bone grafts, the procedure is done to restore bone that was lost to disease, tooth loss or trauma.

When dental bone grafts are necessary

The following are the most common times when dental bone grafts are necessary.

Tooth loss

A lot of people that lose teeth end up needing a dental bone graft because lost teeth result in deterioration of the bone structure. Once a person loses their teeth, the interior jawbone will become much weaker. Over time, the bone structure will be thin and weak. If a patient wants to replace a tooth through dental implants, they will need a dental bone graft in order to properly place the implants.

Dental implants won’t function properly in a mouth that doesn’t have a jawbone to support it. Without the strong jawbone, the implants won’t fuse properly.

Diseased gums

Periodontal disease is one of the worst diseases that one can experience. Often times, it goes unnoticed and it can result in a need for a lot of oral surgery or dental work. When the gums become infected to the point of no return, the bone structure beneath the gums is also prone to deterioration. And, once that bone deteriorates, tooth replacement through dental implants is also going to be very difficult. In this case, a dental bone graft will likely be necessary to support the implants.

Accidents

As unfortunate as it is, accidents happen which can result in trauma to the face or mouth. Sometimes, these accidents can be bad enough that bone structure is damaged. If the jawbone or the surrounding bone structure is damaged then a dental bone graft may be needed in order to repair the damage. Without a bone graft, a patient may not regain full functionality, which can result in trouble with eating, smiling or even speaking normally.
